ASVAB Score – Navy recruits must score at least 35 on the AFQT. The Navy raised this requirement from 31 in 2003 for active duty accessions. Reserve enlistment programs still only require a score of 31.
Education – Like the Air Force, the Navy accepts very, very few recruits who don’t have a high school diploma. To be considered for enlistment with a GED, you must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT. You must also have no drug use, and at least three references from influential members of the community (police, fire, judge, teacher, ect.). Any police involvement, other than minor traffic offenses will also disqualify a GED applicant.
(a) Tattoos/body art/brands. No tattoos/body art/brands on the head, face, neck, or scalp. Tattoos/body art/brands elsewhere on the body that are prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Navy are prohibited. For example, tattoos/body art/brands that are excessive, obscene, sexually explicit or advocate or symbolize sex, gender, racial, religious, ethnic or national origin discrimination are prohibited. In addition, tattoos/body art/brands that advocate or symbolize gang affiliation, supremacist or extremist groups, or drug use are prohibited. Tattoos/body art/brands will not be visible through uniform clothing. Waivers may be requested for prior service and existing tattoos from the Chief of Naval Operations.
I served four years, two on an aircraft carrier and about 18 months in Washington DC. Though I often wondered what the hell I had put myself in, boot camp wasn’t really that bad and it was only for 8 weeks. If you have other questions, just ask.
Your physical condition is stellar compared to mine when I joined. I ran the mile and half around 13 minutes when I first joined (I got it down to around 8 and a half before the accident).
I have seen people get in with ASVABs around 30 and still get in as cooks and such. However, better positions will require higher ASVABs. I was a nuclear reactor operator on a submarine, and my ASVAB was a 98 on the first try.
The tattoos may be an issue, but see if your recruiter can get a waiver for you. You must clear any future tattoos through your chain of command, otherwise you can get punished.
I will say this about Basic Training: put any grudges against working with others of different background away, and do not be the division “smartass”, as you will be worked harder than everyone else. You will also not be allowed to smoke while in Basic Training.
Smoking is allowed in some areas of some ships, depending on the chain of command, but those days are ending.
To make things work well, get some study materials from your recruiter, and if the position that you want does not start you out at E-3, talk with your recruiter to take some “classwork” to get you to start at E-3, which does get you some better benefits and higher pay.
1: penn Foster IS NOT a valid school and would NOT be good enough for the Navy.. you must take 15 credits IN PERSON. The Navy won’t seriously consider anyone unless you get at least a 65 raw score on the ASVAB regardless of your educational status and are only looking to fill certain ratings.. most of which require higher scores such as EOD, CTI, and Nuke.
2: the tatts will all show in uniform and thus are Disqualifying.. a waver for one will be hard enough, you need several. the one on the Finger: is a PDQ and must be REMOVED, no waiver is permitted for hands, face or neck tatts.
so enroll into a LEGITIMATE brick and mortar school.. your local community college is perfect. REMOVE the finger tattoo and hope that the Navy will grant you waivers for the others.
As always, Mrsjvb is dead on, no bullshit. Which is more than I can say for you. If you can run 1.5 miles in 5 minutes while smoking, you should be in the Olympics, not the Navy.
